Buffalo Nickels Partial Set 1913-1938D - Includes 38 Nickels with 1913D Variety II G6
This partially completed Buffalo Nickel Collection 1913 to 1938 is housed in a Whitman Folder (No. 9008) and contains 38 coins out of possible 64 coins. All coins have legible dates except for two. The coins inserted into the 1926-S and 1938-D slots do not have legible dates.
Following is a break down by grade:
AG3 – 1 coin Fine – 9 coins
G4-G6 – 3 coins VF – 9 coins
VG – 14 coins Details, No legible date – 2 coins
I am not a professional coin dealer or coin grader. In grading these coins I used the guidelines provided in (1) The 2013 Official Red Book and (2) Grading Coins by Photographs, 2nd Edition, published by Whitman in 2012. In general, attempts were made to grade on the conservative side, erring on the side of a lower grade. Please see the coins in the photo section and judge for yourself.
The Buffalo nickel (or Indian Head nickel) is a beloved U.S. five-cent coin minted from 1913 to 1938. Designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, it is celebrated for its highly authentic depiction of the American West—featuring a composite Native American profile on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse.
Obverse: A profile of a Native American chief. Fraser used a composite of three men—Chief Iron Tail (Sioux), Chief Two Moons (Cheyenne), and Chief John Big Tree (Seneca).
Reverse: An American bison, heavily inspired by \"Black Diamond,\" a buffalo that lived at the Bronx Zoo.
