A charming 19th-century British School oil painting depicting fisherfolk on the shore, attributed to the Circle of William Collins, RA (1788–1847).
The composition depicts a young fisherwoman seated on the shoreline beside a child, sorting freshly caught fish into a woven basket. Fishing boats can be seen resting on the beach and further out on the water, with a softly atmospheric coastal landscape extending into the distance.
The painting has a particularly appealing Victorian maritime and rural character, with warm earthy tones, carefully observed figures, fishing equipment and a beautifully rendered sky and shoreline.
The work is presented in an attractive antique wooden frame with a dark and gilt-toned finish.
The attribution is given as “Circle of William Collins” and is not presented as a work directly by William Collins.

Bruton Knowles, Gloucester, 11 May 1989, Lot 423, catalogued as “School of William Shayer Senior”, where purchased by the present private collector.

Condition
The painting is in overall good antique condition, commensurate with age. There is visible age-related craquelure and surface wear, particularly noticeable in areas of the sky and darker paint. The surface has the character expected of an older oil painting. The antique frame also shows age-related wear, marks and losses consistent with its period.
