Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress
Designed to meet a US Army Air Corpsrequirement for a multi-engined bomber to replace the B-10, the B-17 first flewon July 18, 1935. Best known for its role in the US Army Air Forces' daylightstrategic bombing campaign during World War II, the B-17 could fly high and hada long range, and was capable of defending itself from enemy fighters. It wasalso tough, withstanding extensive battle damage, and was capable of carrying a6,000 lb bombload. The B-17 became one of the symbols of Allied air power, equipping32 overseas combat groups and dropping a total of 580,631 metric tons of bombson European targets.
Although the men of the 100th Bomb Group had already suffered lossessince arriving in England at the end of May 1943, the mission which definedthis unit and created the legend of the 'Bloody Hundredth' took place on 10thOctober that same year. Sent to target the homes of railway workers at Munster,13 of the 100th Bomb Group's Fortresses were committed to the raid.
On the way into the target, the formation was repeatedly attacked by ahuge force of enemy fighters, only abating when the intense and deadly flakbarrage took over. On the way home, the fighters returned, and American bomberscontinued to fall from the skies, as it seemed the Luftwaffe were determined tomake a statement defence that day.
