I just completed making this extremely beautifulGaboon Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) with a Sapphire Blue Micainlay twistink pen. This is my tribute to the men in Blue. This is my version ofthe \"Thin Blue Line\" pen that they are all familiar with.It was made with the highest quality Gaboon Ebony wood available. I madethis ink pen with a diagonal inlay of Sapphire Blue Mica in the upperpen component. Again, another very rare and exotic type of Jet Blackwood that comes from Cameroon Africa. It simply does not get anybetter than this. This pen is made with 10K Gold plated pen kit partsand comes with a Cross brand Black Ink cartridge in it. I took thephoto\'s this pen, some with and some without a flash to provide thebest viewing of this pen. I will go into a little more detailregarding Gaboon Ebony wood below:

GaboonEbony wood - I start with purchasing my Exotic Gaboon Ebony wood,also knownasGabon Ebony, African Ebony, or West African Ebony(Diospyroscrassiflora) in blocks that I cuttomake my Ebony pens. The tree is a species of lowland-rainforest treein the family Ebenaceae that is endemic to Western Africa. It isnamed after the West African state of Gabon, though it also occurs inCameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, DemocraticRepublic of the Congo and Nigeria. The wood from this particular treeproduces, what is believed to be the blackest of all timber producingDiospyrosspecies.The jet black wood only comes from the heartwood in the center of thetree. The blocks I purchase are quite rare, hard to obtain, and veryexpensive.It is one of the rarest woods in the world. Most blocks I purchaseare 1.5” - 2” square x 12” long. From these 12” long blocks Icut them in half to get smaller 6” long blocks. FromhereI cut each 6” block into 4 pen blanks. So, I get 8 pen blanks fromone 12” long block of wood. From here I cut the pen blanks tomakepen kits. In the photo, isapartially completed kitthatI have put together withapen cap, upper tube with an inlay of Blue Mahoe wood crafted in, anda lower tube ready to be made into an inkpen.

Onlya 150 year old tree and older can produce pure black Gaboon Ebonywood, which is the most expensive type.

GaboonEbony wood originates from Equatorial West Africa, specificallyCameroon. There is also some poorer quality Ebony wood from Indiaavailable but it is poor quality wood with colored streaks in it andI do not buy or useit.This wood is hard and durable with very fine pores, and it polishesto a high luster. This wood is commonly used to make sculptures,carvings, pool cues, doorknobs, tool and knife handles, gun grips,the black keys on pianos, organ-stops, guitar fingerboards andbridges, and chess pieces. It is the wood of choice for thefingerboards, tailpieces, and tuning pegs used on all orchestralstringed instruments, including violins, violas, cellos, etc.Alsoused for inlays, carving, or piano keys. Modern uses are largelyrestricted to small items, such as crucifixes,the main body of some musical instruments such as the clarinet,oboe,or piccolo.Traditionally,black chess pieces,sculptures, crosses, figurines, as well asaccessories such eyewear frames, watches, rings, home furniture,trimming cabinets, decorative bowls, vanes, andinlayswere made from Gaboon Ebony.
