Desert Sands Mission Swirl Planter

A vibrant example of mid-century American art pottery from Desert Sands Pottery, Boulder City, Nevada.
This Mission Swirl planter showcases the signature mineral-and-sand clay technique that made Desert Sands distinctive. Multiple colored clays — red, blue, brown, cream, and black — are blended and wheel-thrown to create a naturally marbled swirl pattern. No two pieces are identical, and the movement in the glaze feels almost geological — reminiscent of desert mineral striations.
Unlike matte Niloak-style pottery, Desert Sands pieces are finished with a glossy, glass-like exterior glaze that intensifies the layered clay beneath the surface. The result is saturated color with beautiful depth and sheen.
This example features an integrated drip tray base, formed as one continuous piece rather than a separate saucer. The underside is fully glazed and retains the original printed Desert Sands mark.
A strong sculptural form with excellent color presence — equally at home in a mid-century modern interior, Southwestern collection, or curated American art pottery grouping.
