Annie Marion MacLean — Women Workers and Society

Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1916. First Edition, First Printing. Dated 1916 on the title page, with “October, 1916” on the copyright page and no additional printings listed. In the exceptionally scarce original dust jacket.

A very scarce First Edition, First Printing of Dr. Annie Marion MacLean\'s Women Workers and Society, an important early twentieth-century study of women, labor, industrialization, and the changing social and economic position of women in American society.

Scarce in the first edition and dramatically scarcer with the original 1916 dust jacket. The survival of the jacket more than a century after publication makes this an exceptionally unusual copy, presumed to be one of only a small number still retaining its original dust jacket.

CONDITION — PLEASE READ

Book: Very Good. Dust Jacket: Good to Very Good.

The book is in Very Good condition, with a tight binding and a sound overall appearance.

There is light bumping and fraying at the spine ends, along with normal age-related wear.

A card pocket is glued to the front endpaper. However, there are no library markings or other indications that this was an ex-library copy.

The exceptionally scarce original 1916 dust jacket is in Good to Very Good condition.

The jacket shows age-related wear, rubbing, chipping, and other wear as visible in the photographs, but remains substantially intact—remarkable for a dust jacket now more than a century old.

The presence of the original jacket is a particularly important feature of this copy. Early twentieth-century dust jackets were frequently discarded, and surviving jackets from this period can be considerably scarcer than the books they originally protected.

A very attractive and exceptionally difficult copy to find complete with its original 1916 dust jacket.

Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

About Dr. Annie Marion MacLean

Annie Marion MacLean (1869–1934) was an important early American sociologist whose work focused particularly upon women, labor, immigration, industry, and the social consequences of rapidly changing economic conditions.

MacLean belonged to the pioneering generation of women who entered professional sociology during a period when American universities and intellectual institutions offered women far fewer opportunities than their male counterparts.

She studied sociology at the University of Chicago, then one of the most important centers for the emerging discipline in the United States.

Her work was distinguished by an interest not merely in abstract social theory but in the actual lives and working conditions of ordinary people, particularly working women.

About Women Workers and Society

Published in 1916, Women Workers and Society examined the changing position of women within America\'s rapidly developing industrial economy.

At the same time, American society was confronting fundamental questions about women\'s economic and social position:

What working conditions should women receive?

How should society respond to the exploitation of female labor?

What responsibilities did employers and government have toward workers?

How was industrial employment changing women\'s lives and their position within the family and society?

These questions placed women workers at the center of some of the most important debates of the Progressive Era.

Women, Labor, and the Progressive Era

The early twentieth century witnessed enormous interest in the conditions faced by working women.

Reformers investigated factory conditions, wages, hours, workplace safety, child labor, tenement life, immigration, poverty, and the relationship between workers and the rapidly expanding industrial economy.

Women themselves played major roles in many of these reform movements while simultaneously becoming an increasingly visible part of the American workforce.

MacLean\'s book emerged directly from this environment.

Published in 1916, Women Workers and Society appeared only four years before ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, during one of the most consequential periods in the history of American women\'s social, political, and economic advancement.

A Pioneering Woman Sociologist

MacLean\'s career is particularly significant within the history of American sociology.

Sociology was only becoming established as a formal academic discipline around the turn of the twentieth century, and women scholars faced substantial barriers to conventional university careers.

Women nevertheless made important contributions to early sociological research, particularly in areas involving labor, poverty, immigration, urban life, social welfare, and the lives of women and children.

MacLean\'s scholarship belongs to this important tradition.

Her work therefore offers a window into two interconnected historical developments: the emergence of modern American sociology and the growing participation of women as professional scholars and investigators of social conditions.

The First Edition

This copy is the First Edition, First Printing, published by A. C. McClurg & Co. in 1916.

The title page is dated 1916, while the copyright page states “October, 1916,” with no additional printings listed.

Most importantly, this copy retains its original 1916 dust jacket.

Dust jackets during this period were often regarded simply as temporary protection for books and were routinely discarded after purchase. Consequently, surviving jackets from the 1910s are far less common than the books themselves.

For an already scarce title such as Women Workers and Society, finding a First Edition accompanied by its original dust jacket more than a century after publication is especially difficult.

This copy is presumed to be among only a small number of surviving examples still retaining the original jacket.

Historical and Collector\'s Significance

Women Workers and Society is of particular interest to collectors and researchers in several overlapping fields:

Women\'s history and women\'s studies.

The history of women in the American workforce.

Labor and industrial history.

Progressive Era social reform.

The development of American sociology.

Early women academics and social scientists.

The changing economic and social position of women during the early twentieth century.

This particular copy adds the significant distinction of being a First Edition, First Printing retaining its exceptionally scarce original 1916 dust jacket.

For collectors of women\'s history, labor history, sociology, Progressive Era reform, early women scholars, and twentieth-century American social history, this is a particularly appealing survival.

A very scarce 1916 First Edition, First Printing of Dr. Annie Marion MacLean\'s Women Workers and Society—complete with its exceptionally scarce original dust jacket, a remarkable survival more than a century after publication.
