Early 19th century linen and wool work with silk highlights sampler by Mary Ann Glasgow? - 1833. I\'ve put a question mark after Mary Ann\'s surname as I\'m not sure if this is her surname or where she lived. There are also two sets of family initials AA & JA, possibly those of her parents, so it may well be that this piece is Scottish. Either way, this sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with eleven rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern with three spot motifs to the right of the last row. The lower section of the linen contains the biblical quotation - Eccles. Chap xii Ver 1. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth - with a set of family initials to either side, both with a crown above and a flower basket and heart below. Mary Anne\'s and the date of 1832 are stitched below with a cross, crown and flower basket to the left and right, then the whole piece is surrounded by a floral border.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places. The sampler is behind glass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the thread appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. This sampler came with paperwork which gives us a description of the frame, the stitches used etc and that it has beenMounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover. The sampler appears to have been purchased by the previous owner in 2005 from a highly reputable and knowledgeable purveyor of fine needlework. As such, I will include this sheet of paperwork which gives a thorough description.
Measures 13\" x 16 1/2\" (sight size) and 18 1/4\" x 21 3/4\" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I\'m STILL continuing to work on!!)
