A very interesting early 20th century Chinese embroidered panel, dating to the Republic period, likely circa 1912–1928.
The embroidery depicts the traditional auspicious Crane and Deer theme, worked on a red ground with coloured silk and metallic threads, surrounded by flowers and decorative motifs.
A particularly interesting feature is the inclusion of two period five-colour flags within the composition. The five-colour flag was adopted by the Republic of China in 1912 and remained in official use during the Beiyang Government period until 1928. The combination of these period flags with the traditional Crane and Deer design gives the piece a distinctive early Republican character.
The panel retains its decorative textile border and shows considerable age and character throughout.
Size: approximately 59 × 38 cm, unframed.
Condition: Good overall condition considering its age, with expected wear, fading, staining and tarnishing/oxidation to the metallic threads. Please study all photographs carefully for the condition and details.
An unusual early Republic Chinese textile combining a traditional auspicious subject with distinctive imagery of the period.
