1937, first edition, softcover (10.25 x 7 inches), exhibition catalog for a group show at the University of Minnesota art gallery. Front cover with modernist screenprinted design.
A very rare book, with no other copies currently for sale anywhere else online, and only 14 in OCLC.In good condition: text is clean and unmarked; covers with a few faint stains and fading; former owner\'s signature to title page; the spine has been reinforced with archival tissue and is sturdy, but still has some small splits and chips. Book comes in a custom mylar sleeve.
Not illustrated, but includes entries for the 67 artists who were included in the show. Each entry has a biography plus the name of the artwork submitted and the gallery/collection who lent it. One page foreword by curator Ruth Lawrence at the front.
Importantly, the show was one of the first in America to include a painting by Josef Albers. According to the David Zwirner exhibition history of Albers, this was Albers\' 4th group exhibit in America. It also had to be one of the first modern art shows held between Chicago and California.Other artists in the show included Isabel Bishop, Werner Drewes, Arshile Gorky, Karl Knaths, Benjamin Kopman, Loren Maciver, Emanuel Romano, Frederic Taubes, Max Weber and Karl Zerbe.
