Edo Period Kozuka Boat Scene Signed Hosono Masamori NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon For Sale

This is an antique Japanese kozuka from the Edo period.

The piece is signed “Hosono Sozaemon Masamori” (with kao) and comes with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon (Especially Preserved) certification papers.

It features a detailed boat scene (norai-bune / passenger boat), depicting figures aboard a vessel in a lively and refined composition.
The work is executed on a polished shakudo ground using fine kebori engraving and hira-zogan (flat inlay), showcasing delicate and precise craftsmanship.

Hosono Masamori (Sozaemon) was known for depicting scenes of everyday life, particularly landscapes of Kyoto.
He specialized in extremely fine engraving and inlay work, and is associated with the Kyoto area (Ogawa, Nijo district).

This piece reflects his characteristic style, with intricate details and an elegant narrative composition.

Comes with a paulownia wood box and NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.
