Englishporcelain jug by Royal Worcester, England, dated 1892. Theglobular body with a tall, gently tapering neck is decorated with finelypainted garden flower blossoms in soft polychrome enamels with discreet gildedoutlines, leaving the creamy Worcester porcelain ground visually dominant,while a fired gold dragon in complete relief is coiled around the neck and bodyto form a sculptural handle - a feature occasionally described as a “serpenthandle”. Thedragon is crisply modelled with defined head, limbs and textured surface,functioning both as handle and as the principal decorative accent; the gildingis thick and richly toned, characteristic of Royal Worcester’s high-qualityornamental wares of the late 19th century, and the lip and spout are neatlyfinished and edged in gold. The base bears the purpleRoyal Worcester trademark with crown and the factory dating mark with one dotfor 1892, together with the impressed model number 260 and painted decorator’snumber 51, consistent with Worcester factory practice. The jug reflects late Victorian taste for Japonisme and fantasticalnatural forms combined with the restrained floral naturalism for which RoyalWorcester was particularly admired in the early 1890s.Collectible for its rare figural dragon handle, secure factory dating,and exceptional preservation of both gilding and enamel decoration.
