Three-volume group of this scarce Fulton County, Indiana genealogical reference, now including Volume 1 in addition to Volumes 3 and 4. All three volumes are in fine, nearly as-new condition. Bindings are tight and square with clean interiors. Volume 3 bears a neat bookplate to the front pastedown (“This Book Belongs to… Scottsdale, Arizona”), the only noted ownership mark. Black pebbled cloth bindings remain exceptionally clean with bright gilt spine titling and only the faintest evidence of handling.
Volume 1, copyright 1976, covers Wayne, Liberty & Henry Townships. Volume 3 covers Richland, Aubbeenaubbee & Union Townships, while Volume 4 covers Rochester Township & City. Together the three volumes provide an extensive record of Fulton County cemetery inscriptions, organized systematically by township and cemetery. Entries record names, dates, familial relationships and genealogical notes, preserving information from individual grave markers and family plots.
Particularly useful for genealogical and military research, the books include extensive indexing and identification of military service markers. Volume 1, for example, separately indexes veterans and markers associated with the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, Korean War and Vietnam War, as well as GAR and American Legion emblems. Volume 4 additionally includes a plotted cemetery diagram/map useful for correlating transcribed entries with physical grave locations.
The Tombaughs’ Fulton County cemetery volumes represent the sort of highly localized genealogical documentation that was generally produced in limited quantities for libraries, historical societies and family researchers. Their transcription of inscriptions is particularly valuable as a preservation record, since stones documented decades ago may now be weathered, damaged, moved or lost.
