The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language

Francis Turner Palgrave, editor

Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press

1919

Oxford Edition

Overall Good. Sound and square, with a firm text block. The dark leather boards exhibit extensive rubbing and surface wear, particularly along the edges and corners, while the richly gilt-decorated spine remains attractive despite general wear. The gilt page edges show rubbing and scattered marks. Both endpaper hinges have been reinforced with tape. A Baxter’s Book Store stamp appears on the front endpapers, and a modern handwritten note appears on the rear endpaper. The flyleaf bears a handwritten presentation inscription. The text body is clean and unmarked. No dust jacket.

An attractive Oxford edition in a decorative leather binding, featuring elaborate gilt spine tooling, a contrasting red title label, gilt borders, and marbled-style endpapers. The collection contains four books of English lyric poetry, together with additional poems, editorial notes, an index of writers, and an index of first lines. A portrait of Alfred, Lord Tennyson serves as the frontispiece. This edition includes one hundred additional poems extending the collection through the end of the nineteenth century.

First published in 1861, Francis Turner Palgrave’s The Golden Treasury became one of the most enduring anthologies of English poetry. Its selections span several centuries of English verse, bringing together works by Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats, and many others. Palgrave dedicated the original collection to Alfred Tennyson, whose encouragement and assistance helped shape the anthology. This 1919 Oxford edition preserves that literary tradition in an elegant, well-worn leather binding, with an early twentieth-century presentation inscription adding a personal touch to its history.
