What makes the design interesting
The large objects surrounding the center aren\'t simply decorative plaques. They are sabretaches—flat leather bags historically suspended from a cavalry officer\'s belt alongside his saber. Hermès explains that the sabretache disappeared from French military uniforms around 1870. Metz drew on material from the Émile Hermès collection when creating the design.
There are eight sabretaches in the design. The four positioned at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o\'clock have distinctive designs, while the alternating four repeat another design.
The central arrangement incorporates Imperial Guard epaulettes, while the surrounding decoration includes military cords, tassels and other cavalry regalia.
