This is a classic work by a minister and writer who preached in the Philadelphia area in the mid-to-late 1800s. Newton (1813-1887) was born in Liverpool, England but settled with his parents in the United States at a young age. This book contains biographical sketches of 19 early saints of the Christian church. Included are saints Cyprian, Julian the Apostate, Basil the Great, Ambrose, John Chrysostum, Jerome, and Patrick. The book is generously illustrated with stunning b&w drawings of several saints, as well as important geographical settings.
