Originally published in Spain, 1684. This French translation first published in Paris, 1691. This edition published in The Hague, 1692. First printing of this edition, third edition overall, including the original 1684 publication. See the following website for a bibliography of the book's publication history:
[link removed by ]Written by Spanish playwright and historian Antonio de Solis y Rivadeneyra (1610-1668), known after this book's publication as the "first chronicler of the Indies."
Fourteen fold-out copper-engraved plates by Fouard (1653-1726), French engraver, printmaker, maritime mapmaker. Additional smaller ornamental engravings incorporated into the body of the text. All plates originally issued are present. Two of the plates are maps.
The books are in very good condition, outstanding for their age. One engraved plate is detached (pictured), and the front cover of volume I has a hairline split to leather (also pictured), not affecting functionality.
Tight bindings, bright and clean pages. Both volumes are almost completely free of foxing. Texts have a very few scattered, thin underlinings in pen, from what seems long ago. Previous owner's name neatly signed in front of both volumes.
I can't find any other copies online from an edition this early.
