Attractive copy of this very scarce first printing of the first standalone edition of Kipling\'s most famous, and justly admired, poem. A244 in Richards\' bibliography of Kipling, this is the green morocco binding, variant (i), with the interior variant (a) (dark green initial stanza letters and frame rules), and publisher note (page [5]) variant iii (priority unknown per Richards). Small oblong 8vo with 8 double leaves plus endpapers, bound with a yellow cord.
In better condition than typically seen. Leather still supple, has fading and minor scuffs but overall whole and attractive with bright gilt. Faint ownership signature inside on front pastedown endpaper. Tanned pattern to perimeter of pastedown endpapers. Suggestion of a faint crease or ripple to leather on back but paper on pastedown inside not broken or creased. If you look deep into the front hinge you can see evidence of a subtle repair; pretty inconspicuous but I wanted to mention it. This book had two other cheaper bindings, a redimitationleather and two variants of paper boards.
