Campbell traveled with a strong missionary and humanitarian concern, seeking to understand the suffering and conditions of Armenians and other Christian populations under the Ottoman Empire. Written less than a decade before the Armenian genocide of 1915, the book offers a contemporary Western account of Armenian life and communities before their subsequent destruction and displacement.
