Avianca leased the aircraft during 1998-1999 to provide additional long haul capacity on international routes from Colombia. Powered by three General Electric CF6-80C2 engines, the MD-11 offered substantial passenger capacity, cargo volume, and intercontinental range. N278WA\'s service with Avianca was relatively brief, making it a particularly unusual aircraft in the Colombian carrier\'s history. Avianca operated only one MD-11, with N278WA representing the type in its fleet.
McDonnell Douglas MD-11 Designed as a wide-bodied passenger and freight transport, the MD11 was first flown on January 10th, 1990.
