Rollo in Holland — Jacob AbbottFrom the Rollo’s Tour in Europe Series | Copyright 1858 | IllustratedA charming and beautifully bound nineteenth-century edition of Jacob Abbott’s Rollo in Holland, part of his celebrated Rollo’s Tour in Europe series.
The copyright page states “Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1858, by Jacob Abbott,” while the illustrated title page identifies R. Anderson, Publishers, N.Y.Jacob Abbott (1803–1879) was one of the most prolific American writers of educational literature for children during the nineteenth century. His enormously popular Rollo books follow a young boy through adventures designed to entertain while introducing readers to geography, history, travel, practical reasoning, and everyday life.In Rollo in Holland, Abbott transports his readers to the Netherlands, following Rollo and his companions as they experience nineteenth-century European travel and Dutch life. The book describes steamship journeys, Rotterdam,The Hague, canals, villages, transportation, and other aspects of Holland that would have seemed wonderfully exotic to many young American readers of the period.
The volume is illustrated throughout with attractive black-and-white engravings. Particularly appealing is the illustration captioned “Landing from the Mail Boat,” showing passengers being transferred from a large steam vessel. The illustrated title page is also especially decorative, incorporating the Rollo’s Tour in Europe title into a maritime composition with ships and rigging. The book retains its handsome Victorian pictorial cloth binding. The brown cloth front board is richly decorated in black and gilt, featuring a large gilt banner reading “Rollo’s Tour in Europe” against an elaborate ship-and-rigging design. Decorative geometric and foliate borders surround the composition. The spine carries additional black and gilt decoration together with the titles “Rollo’s Tour in Europe” and “Rollo in Holland.”
The surviving gilt remains attractive and gives the volume considerable shelf presence.Condition: Good antiquarian condition with expected evidence of age and use. The binding shows rubbing and edge wear, with more noticeable wear, fraying, and loss at the head of the spine. The interior exhibits age toning and occasional signs of handling. The illustrations and printed text remain attractive and clearly legible. Please examine the photographs carefully for the binding and interior condition. An appealing piece of Victorian American children’s literature and travel writing, particularly desirable for its elaborate pictorial binding, numerous period illustrations, maritime imagery, and connection with Jacob Abbott’s influential Rollo series.Note to Buyer: This is an antique book and naturally shows signs of its age and history.
