What a fantastic find. Kawaguchi was one of the greatest cloisonné makers in Meiji Japan, certainly one of the most revered.
Known for small pieces that bring prices in the mid-thousands this little piece is a conundrum. Is it a salesman\'s sample to show buyers? Or is it just a effort to show off and make a tsuiki-jippo vase in ultra-miniature? About 2 1/2\" tall and amazing little details hidden in the blood red.
A silver bodied cabinet piece that deserves a place in the finest collections of cloisonné in the world. If it is a salesman\'s sample it is of the highest rarity, possibly unique.
Excellent condition with no enamel loss very minor dent in the sterling foot. Signed on base.
Edit: description updated to show this was done with the tsuiki-jippo technique and not ginbari. -Thanks to user al.clark for this tidbit.
