Joan Miró (1893–1983) is one of the most joyful and original voices of modern art, the Catalan master who turned painting into a language of signs, stars, birds, and dancing forms. Born in Barcelona and shaped by the landscapes of rural Catalonia, he arrived in Paris in the 1920s and fell in with the Surrealists, yet like the greatest artists he belonged to no school but his own. His canvases, with their floating constellations, bold primary colors, and childlike spontaneity hiding rigorous craft, opened a path that abstract art would follow for decades. His works hang today in MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, and the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, and his monumental sculptures and ceramics mark public spaces from Paris to Chicago. Miró was also one of the most passionate printmakers of the twentieth century, producing thousands of lithographs and etchings over his long career and regarding the print not as a copy but as an art form in its own right. Working with the great Parisian ateliers, including Mourlot, he brought to lithography the same exuberance as his paintings: saturated reds, blues, and yellows, playful calligraphic lines, and an unmistakable sense of freedom. His prints remain among the most beloved and widely collected works on paper of any modern master.
