The figure of Christ is rendered in elongated, expressive form, with flowing hair, gently inclined head and extended arms. The simplified anatomy and fluid modelling are characteristic of Mimovich\'s highly individual sculptural language, creating a contemplative rather than traditionally naturalistic interpretation.
The bronze contrasts beautifully with the restrained architectural form of the timber cross, giving the piece a strong presence when displayed. At 55.5 cm high, it is a particularly substantial example.
Mimovich (1920–2019) was an Austrian-born Australian sculptor whose extensive practice included religious sculpture, with her crucifixes, Madonnas, saints and Stations of the Cross found in churches, schools, public collections and private homes throughout Australia.
