The Military Standard: W.A. .30 caliber smokeless powder was adopted as the standard propellant for U.S. military service rifles from 1896 until 1908.The "W.A." Meaning: The "W.A." stands for The American Smokeless Powder Company, which manufactured the powder.
Corporate Shifts: After the American Smokeless Powder Company's plant exploded in 1898, Laflin & Rand took over the company, rebuilt the plant in Haskell, New Jersey, and continued producing the powder. In 1902, DuPont acquired Laflin & Rand, though production continued.
Rifle Use: It was the government powder used in the first U.S. military cartridge designed for smokeless powder, the .30 Army (.30-40 Krag).
