An impressive pair of signed and dated European oil portraits depicting a husband and wife, painted in Hungary during the final years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The portraits are signed F. Petkó Zsigmond (or a closely related spelling) and dated 1906 and 1907. The female portrait bears an additional inscription believed to reference Sármellék, Hungary and the date August 13, 1907.
These striking companion portraits depict a distinguished gentleman with a full beard and piercing blue eyes alongside an elegantly dressed woman in black attire. Both works display strong academic portrait technique, expressive facial modeling, and excellent decorative presence.
The paintings remain together as a matched pair more than a century after their creation and are housed in substantial carved gilt frames that complement their period character beautifully.
