We are offering an antique oval Victorian mourning brooch with a small lock of hair (or perhaps two locks of hair as one is brown and one blonde) behind glass that is encircled with embellished gold or gold tilled metal. It measures 1 x 1 1/2 inches.
Queen Victoria made mourning customs popular, but hair art was used for both grief and love tokens. Victorians valued human hair because it essentially never decays, symbolizing an immortal soul and an eternal bond.These brooches were frequently framed in yellow gold (such as 9K or 14K) and often accented with black enamel to represent sorrow. This particular brooch appears to have both brown and blonde hair behind the glass.
Very good condition. I was unable to open the clasp however.
