This listing is for a late 19th / early 20th century Chinese Raku & flambé-glazed bud vase, featuring a beautifully atmospheric Jun-style glaze in rich tones of dusky lavender, plum and oxblood red. The glaze has a wonderfully organic, flowing quality, with darker gold-brown and almost black areas cascading down from the neck into the rounded body, contrasting beautifully with the softer blue and mauve ground beneath.
The vase has a particularly attractive bulbous form, rising from a short, slightly waisted foot into a generously rounded body before narrowing elegantly towards the tall, gently flared neck. The softly irregular pooling and movement of the glaze give the surface considerable depth, with the colours changing subtly depending on the light and viewing angle.
The flambé glaze is full of character, with natural variations, drips and transitions throughout that make the piece feel entirely unique. This type of unpredictable, atmospheric glazing was highly prized for its resemblance to earlier Chinese Jun wares and became particularly popular during the revival of traditional Chinese ceramic forms in the late Qing and early 20th century.
A striking and highly decorative little vase, equally appealing displayed on its own or incorporated into a collection of Chinese ceramics. Its rich, muted palette and sculptural rounded form would work beautifully within both traditional and contemporary interiors.
