A Little History Behind the Designs
$1 – 1864 Design
The $1 design is based on the Confederate States issue dated February 17, 1864. The original note features a central portrait of Alabama politician Clement Claiborne Clay surrounded by an ornamental wreath. Original examples were produced in Richmond during the final major Confederate currency issue of the Civil War.
$5 – 1864 Design
The $5 is based on the Confederate T-69 issue of February 17, 1864. The central vignette depicts the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, while the lower-right portrait is Christopher G. Memminger, the first Confederate Secretary of the Treasury.
$10 – 1864 Design
The $10 is based on the Confederate T-68 issue of February 17, 1864. Its central scene depicts mounted soldiers and field artillery, while the portrait is Robert M. T. Hunter, who served as Confederate Secretary of State and later as a Confederate senator.
These Whitman pieces were produced generations later as collectible facsimile money.
The small FACSIMILE marking is visible on the reverse designs and is shown clearly in the photographs.
