Up for sale is a rare, highly collectible lot of four (4) original antique softcover textbook modules from the Progress for the Promotion of the Fine Arts series. Published monthly by the International Art Association in Chicago, Illinois, this pioneering university-extension course provided a complete, beautifully illustrated curriculum in global art history at the turn of the 20th century.
This historic lot includes the highly sought-after Premier Volume I, Number 1 issue that officially kicked off the series.
LOT INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING 4 ISSUES:
- April 1901 - Features academic text and plates focusing on classical European art traditions, including Arthur Hoeber's curriculum on Painting of the Nineteenth Century in Belgium, Italy and Spain (Page 501).
- May 1901 - Continuing the spring course curriculum block focusing on classical composition and decoration.
- September 1901 (Volume I, No. 1 - PREMIER ISSUE) - The inaugural premier issue of the course series. Features the highly celebrated lesson Painting of the Nineteenth Century in Germany, Holland, Scandinavia and Russia by Robert Koehler, including a sharp plate reproduction of his famous labor masterpiece, The Strike.
- October 1901 (Volume I, No. 2) - The consecutive second installment, detailing the British Pre-Raphaelite painters (including Sir John Everett Millais' Elizabeth in the Tower).
