Designed by world-famous architect and designer, Richard Meier (1934 - ) in the Post Modern style for jeweler Swid Powell – this silverplate-over-brass peppermillwas manufactured by the Italian design firm, Cleto Munari in 1985.
Considered a rare, iconic example of the Post Modern style – where elegant restraint meets sculptural modernism – this fully functional peppermill stands 6.5\" tall and is 1.75\" in diameter.
As a testament to its iconic style, it is included in the 1990 book by Rizzoli, Swid Powell: Objects by Architects.
Hard to find in decent condition, this example is in mint condition, with only very minor (very small, hardly noticeable) flaws to the silverplate (not loss of silverplate).
This item has been in my personal collection since 1986 and very well cared for – which is very evident for its 40-plus years of age.

Designer architect Richard Meier is the youngest architect to ever receive the highly-coveted Pritzker Prize (1984) at age 49. His style – defined by geometric forms, open spatial planning, and the use of pure white materials to accentuate light and nature – helped carry high, modernist design into contemporary architecture. Over six decades, Meier would create monumental public spaces – museums, churches, civic buildings, and residences worldwide – including the Getty Center is Los Angeles, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the Jubilee Church in Rome. His consistent vision has sustained modernist architecture and established standards of clarity and rigor in design.
The Seattle design firm, Swid Powell produced high-end tableware and home decor items – including jewelry from 1982-1984. The company was founded by the famous designers Ray and Charles Eames, along with architect Robert Swid and graphic designer Roger Powell.
