- First firing:The glass is initially fired to shape and form the desired object.
- Applique of Gold and Enamel:Hot applique is used to apply enamel flowers and gold leaf onto the surface of the glass.
- Second Firing:The glass is fired a second time to allow the design to set.
- Final Firing:A final firing is applied to ensure that the gold leaf and enamel are permanently integrated into the glass.
- Slow Cooling:The glass is slowly cooled to prevent it from shattering during the cooling process.
See Youtube videos to see how gold leafing is executed. SophisticatedGold leafing dates back to the 1500’s and was performed by applying 24K goldleaf to the surface of the cooled glass vessel in the following manner; Goldleaf was supplied with a paper backing; the artisan would prepare a water andgum arabic paste which was placed on the host glass vessel and then the goldleaf was carefully positioned on glass and then the pre-conceived decorationwas cut away utilizing an incised stylus. With the paper backing, the thinlayer of gold was easier to cut using sharp instruments; When the adhesivedried, the backing of paper was peeled away leaving the artisan’s gold designon the glass; after drying, the glass vessel was then lowered into an annealingoven and heated to about 950 degrees Fahrenheit; the punty was later used toretrieve the vessel from the annealing oven and it was returned to the glassfurnace; when the vessel was re-introduced into the very hot glory hole of thefurnace -- the walls of the glass would soften and the gold now would adhereand permanently meld to the host vessel. The raised enameling was done in asimilar fashion.
I have always had a curious nature about humanity’s precedent and have spentmost of my life from early childhood into adulthood searching out the treasuresand secrets of our past; collecting them; researching them; and on occasionwriting about them. I surround myself with them, wear them, display them, andtell other people about what I have discovered about their history. Whencircumstances dictate, I must then pass on my treasures, knowledge, andcollections to present generations; not for financial remuneration, but ratherto spread our ancestral legacy to our progeny, so that the labors and riches ofthe past are not lost to the annals of changing times; but continue to futuregenerations.BROWSE MY SHOP FOR MORE "UNCOMMON TREASURES".
