This book reproduces a lengthy 1946 interview of Mao Tse-tung, Chairman of the Communist Party of China.
There are two important features of this interview.
First, Mao details what was happening during the transition period when the anti-Japanese United Front in China had ended with the end of World War II and the Civil War in China had picked up again between the Kuomintang Party headed by Chiang Kai-shek and the Communist Party and its People\'s Liberation Army (PLA).
Second, Mao details how the United States was giving political, economic, and military support to the KMT and meddling in Chinese affairs in 1946. Ultimately, in spite of this meddling, the Communists won, established the People\'s Republic of China in 1949, and the KMT retreated off the Chinese mainland to the Chinese island of Taiwan, where it remains today.
The only reason the island was not taken by the People\'s Liberation Army during the Chinese Civil War (and during the years since) was because of the American threat of war if China were to take the island province. The American meddling in China\'s domestic affairs in 1946 [ultimately leading to the artificial separation of Taiwan from the Chinese mainland] is discussed in some detail in Mao\'s interview reprinted in this book.
This is an important book for a person interested in Chinese history, particularly 20th Century history, and the history of the circumstances leading to the Chinese Civil War and the founding of the People\'s Republic of China. It reveals a lot regarding America\'s 80 year old failing strategy of attempting to split China and nibble away at its borders and destroy its unity.
