MASTERS AND MASTERPIECES OF THE SCREEN
Compiled by C. W. Taylor
Introduction by Will H. Hays
P. F. Collier & Son Company, New York
1927 First Edition
Large oblong hardcover folio

A fascinating and heavily illustrated contemporary survey of the American motion-picture industry published in1927, at the height of the silent-film era and immediately before sound transformed Hollywood.

Compiled by C. W. Taylor, with an introduction by Will H. Hays, then President of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America,Masters and Masterpieces of the Screendocuments the development of motion pictures through their leading stars, directors, films, production methods and technical achievements.

The oversized 112-page volume is profusely illustrated throughout with sepia-toned photographs, portraits and film stills.

Among the personalities and films represented areBuster Keaton, Clara Bow, Norma Talmadge, Harold Lloyd, Our Gang, and numerous other major figures of the silent screen. Particularly interesting sections document the filmmaking techniques and special-effects work of the period, including the remarkable stop-motion dinosaurs and creatures created for the 1925 production ofThe Lost World.

The book is an evocative visual record of Hollywood at precisely the moment when the silent era was reaching its artistic and commercial peak.

CONDITION: FAIR overall, with a substantially better-preserved interior.

The principal condition issue is the binding. The original cloth spine and adjoining material showconsiderable deterioration, fraying, splitting and losses, particularly along the joints and at the head and foot of the spine. Please examine the photographs carefully, particularly the detailed spine photograph.

The paper-covered boards show age-related soiling, rubbing, staining, edge wear and bumped/worn corners.

Despite the exterior wear, theinterior remains quite attractive for a book approaching 100 years old. Pages show expected age toning and occasional spotting/foxing, but the numerous photographic illustrations remain clear and strong.

Because of the fragile condition of the spine, the book should be handled carefully.
