McLoughlin Bros. was one of the most important American publishers of nineteenth-century children\'s books and played a pioneering role in the development of inexpensive, vividly illustrated children and young adult literature. The firm grew out of the printing and engraving work of John McLoughlin, Jr., who learned wood engraving and printing as a young man and began publishing picture books under his own name before forming McLoughlin Bros. with his younger brother Edmund in the 1850s. The company became particularly notable for its systematic experimentation with color reproduction, progressing from hand-stenciled illustrations and relief printing to chromolithography.
During the latter half of the nineteenth century, McLoughlin Bros. expanded enormously, producing picture books, toy books, chapbooks, games, puzzles, paper dolls, and other forms of children\'s ephemera. By the 1880s the firm was issuing books featuring increasingly sophisticated color illustrations, including large-format picture books as well as the distinctive linen books designed to withstand the handling of young readers.
