Biography

Born in Montmartre on November 11, 1904, Rodolphe Caillaux is known for his landscape paintings, his seascapes, his portraits and his genre scenes, especially bullfights. Familiar with the Basque Country which he often painted, he also created the Maurice Ravel medal for the Paris Mint. A street bears his name in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

After performing in the music hall in one-man shows, Rodolphe Caillaux made his debut as a painter at the Salon des Indépendants in 1928, at the same time as Raymond Feuillatte, Alexander Calder, Otto Freundlich, Jean Hélion, Georges Papazoff and Joaquin Torres Garcia1. He entered the Salon d\'Automne in 1932. With the war he moved to Pau in 1940. There he helped organize the Béarnais Autumn Salon. He returned to Paris in 1947. Installed at the Montmartre-aux-artistes city at 189, Rue Ordener, Rodolphe Caillaux nevertheless remained close to Pau since he was inducted into the Royal Viguerie of Jurançon in 1953 at the rank of dignitary2. Elected that same year as a member of the Salon des Indépendants Committee, he was its Vice-President from 1955 to 1956. From 1957 he took charge of a group at the Salon Comparisons of which he became president following Andrée Bordeaux-Le Pecq3. It was as president of the Salon Comparisons that he was named a knight of the Legion of Honor (the request was made by his friend Maurice Boitel as a representative of the Salon committee. Rodolphe Caillaux was a member of the Salon d\'Automne in 19574 and Honorary President of the Salon Comparisons.
Continuation of one-man shows

On the occasion of official ceremonies and dinners, openings, receptions with established authorities or foreign ambassadors, weddings of his colleagues or their children, Rodolphe Caillaux, who had a bass voice, was regularly asked to do an improvised show and tell jokes with appropriate facial expressions. Some of these stories are still taken up by current comedians like Jean-Marie Bigard[ref. necessary].
Family and friends

Nephew of Joseph Caillaux, he counted, among his close fellow friends, Jean Baudet, who exhibited in his personal gallery in Biarritz and whom Caillaux invited to his group at the Salon Comparaisons, as well as Maurice Boitel, group leader at “Compariisons” for forty-five years. Married, Rodolphe Caillaux has no known descendants.
