Shawnee County Kansas • World War II • Veterans Portraits & Service Records
The Men and Women in World War II from Shawnee County is an unusually detailed pictorial record of the men and women of Shawnee County and Topeka, Kansas, who served in the armed forces during World War II. Rather than a general military history, the volume preserves individual local service records alongside hundreds of portrait photographs, making it particularly valuable as a piece of Kansas genealogy and community history.
Arranged alphabetically, entries identify individual servicemen and women and provide biographical and military information. As shown in the photographs, records can include parents or spouses, service or Army serial numbers, dates of entry, training locations, units or branches, overseas theaters, campaigns, decorations, discharge dates, and other service details.
The large-format volume contains 151 pages and is extensively illustrated with portraits. Its distinctive embossed cover features a raised American flag in red, white and silver above the title, The Men and Women in World War II from Shawnee County. A substantial primary-era record of the generation from Topeka and surrounding Shawnee County that served during World War II.
Very Good condition. Original embossed hardcover shows light rubbing and handling wear around the edges with some age-related toning and surface wear. The elaborate raised cover design and red, white and silver American flag remain attractive and clearly defined. Binding is sound. Interior pages are clean and unmarked with light toning to the endpapers and text-block edges. Portrait photographs and printed service records remain clear and readily readable. Please review photographs for the binding and representative interior pages.
