Vintage two-volume set of Meta Given\'s Modern Encyclopedia of Cooking, published by J. G. Ferguson in Chicago. Together the volumes form an extensive mid-century cooking and home-economics reference covering recipes, meal planning, food preservation, entertaining, kitchen equipment, measurements, techniques, and more.
This is a mixed-edition set:
Volume I — 1949, Third Printing (May 1949). Copyright page also lists the February 1947 first printing and August 1948 second printing.
Volume II — 1959 New Revised Edition.
Although from different printings/editions, the volumes complement one another as an A–Z cooking reference and present attractively together with similar green bindings and colorful period dust jackets.
Both books retain their vintage dust jackets, which have been placed in clear protective covers. These protective covers appear to have been added after publication to help preserve the jackets; their exact age and origin are unknown.
The hardcover books themselves are generally clean and well preserved for age, with attractive green bindings and clean interiors overall.
Condition details include age-related dust-jacket wear, old tape and tape residue, and water staining/evidence along the inside flap of one dust jacket; the moisture evidence does not appear to extend into the corresponding book. Volume II has old tape remaining on the front and rear covers as well as evidence of prior tape removal/residue. Volume II also has separation/tearing at the front inner hinge/binding area; the book remains attached and the pages remain secure. Volume I has a small penciled notation near the front. General age toning, minor edge/corner wear, and other typical vintage characteristics are present.
