This feminine figure, nude yet sovereign, emerges from shadow into light, as if crossing from one world to another, from night to narrative, from silence to voice.
Through the tension between the dark curtain and the luminous space surrounding her, Michel Suret-Canale pays homage to the symbolic power of storytelling — to Shéhérazade, the legendary narrator of One Thousand and One Nights, who saves her life through the act of telling stories and, in doing so, recreates the world.
The composition’s restrained balance emphasizes gesture and verticality.
The contrast of reds and golds, the presence of the empty chair on the right — a trace of waiting or suspended dialogue — together create an atmosphere that is both intimate and theatrical.
Between figuration and abstraction, Suret-Canale continues his exploration of inner light and the feminine as a metaphor for passage — from shadow to awareness, from the visible to the imagined.
