This extraordinary 19th-century Continental European 800 silver snuff box is a jewel-like example of the luxurious objets de vertu produced for the fashionable European market. Richly decorated on virtually every visible surface, the box combines 800 silver, warm gold gilding, hand engraving, cobalt and white enamel, and a finely hand-painted mythological miniature into a remarkably sophisticated small work of art.The lid is particularly striking. A brilliant cobalt-blue enamel ground is covered with elaborate gilt scrolling foliage and floral ornament, framed by a contrasting white enamel border with additional gold decoration. At the center is a delicately painted classical marine scene depicting what appears to be a Nereid riding a hippocamp—one of the most evocative subjects inherited from the art of ancient Greece and Rome. The Nereids were the sea-nymph daughters of Nereus, traditionally associated with the beauty and benevolent aspects of the sea and regarded as protectors of sailors. Ancient artists frequently portrayed these graceful female divinities riding dolphins, sea creatures, and particularly hippocamps, the fantastical horses of the sea. The hippocamp itself is a fascinating creature of classical mythology, conventionally combining the forequarters and head of a horse with the curling, fish-like body or tail of a marine creature.The exceptional workmanship continues around the entire box. Each side has been individually hand engraved, creating a richly textured decorative surface rather than leaving the secondary areas plain. The silver has additionally been gold gilt, giving the metal its warm golden appearance and providing a luxurious contrast against the intense cobalt enamel. The combination of engraving, gilding, enameling, and miniature painting demonstrates the considerable amount of specialized handwork required to produce such a small object.Measuring approximately 3 inches wide, 2 inches deep, and 0.50 inch high, the box weighs 64 grams. The box is stamped “800,” indicating Continental silver of 800/1000 fineness. Good antique condition with light signs of wear and handling. Some rubbing loss to the gold gilding. There is a small crimped tear near the hinge on the right side.
