This is a more graphic colorway, almost a nocturnal version officially titled Marron / Noir / Blanc (often listed as colorway 13). Here the foal’s stripes stay true black and white, while the fynbos is recast in deep browns, espresso, ivory, and charcoal. The nearly forty plant species remain, but they read as etched botanical studies rather than a spring carpet — drier, more sculptural, closer to the fire-regenerated shrubland after the blaze has passed. This is a quieter colorway than the jewel-toned editions, and unusually striking because the zebra’s graphic coat becomes the brightest element in a sepia-and-ink landscape.
Story Behind It:
The design depicts a young Cape mountain zebra foal (a rare, protected subspecies native to South Africa\'s southeastern provinces) wandering curiously through thefynbos— the unique, biodiverse shrubland vegetation of the Cape region. Fynbos thrives in nutrient-poor soil and regenerates after periodic bush fires; in spring, it blooms into a fragrant, multicolored floral carpet. Alice Shirley meticulously illustrated almost 40 different plant species to frame the zebra in this dreamlike, lush setting, highlighting the beauty and fragility of this ecosystem. Issued in 2019 (Fall/Winter collection), it reflects Shirley\'s fascination with African wildlife and conservation themes. The title \"MOUNTAIN ZEBRA\" appears prominently in the design.
