No Retreat From Tomorrow: President Linden B. Johnson's 1967 Messages to the 90th Congress. Hand SIGNED and Inscribed to Senator Bill Holmstrom and dated Jan 1967 by Linden B. Johnson.
A few notes on this:[1] This Book documents LBJ's accomplishments during the year of 1967 and was published and printed in a hurry so the Book could be gifted as 1967 Christmas presents. Gifting this in Jan 1967 would not be possible as it was not printed for another 11 months.[2] Bill Holmstrom did not become a Senator until 1971 when he took on the positions ofSenate Majority Leader and Chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee. Not a Senator in 1967 as the inscription might indicate.
Solutions:
Because LBJ left office in January 1969, he was a private citizen living at his Texas ranch by the time Bill Holmstrom actually became an Oregon State Senator in January 1971.
This narrows down the mystery of this signed No Retreat From Tomorrow to the following:
The Post-Presidency Gift: LBJ frequently signed and gifted copies of his presidential books from his ranch in Texas during his retirement (1969–1973). It would have been done during this window.
The "Jan 1967" Date: Since LBJ was completely out of office and living in retirement when Holmstrom became a Senator, the "Jan 1967" written on the page is strictly a historical marker referencing the content of the book (the 1967 congressional session), rather than the calendar date of the inscription, or possibly a slip of mind during the Jan 1971 Senator's elections.
It means this book is a piece of post-presidential presentation history, likely sent from the LBJ Ranch to the newly minted Oregon Senator in the early 1970s.
This Book is in Excellent condition inside and out, with a very light hint of yellow at the edges of the pages due to cigarette smoke and a very light odor of it. The only markings in the Book is the signature and inscription by LBJ to Senator Bill Holmstrom of Oregon. The Dust Jacket is in Good+ condition with some tape repairs on the inside (see photos).
