This genuine, rare and NGC certified ancient Numidian Empire coin is an amazing piece of history. Minted between 208 BC to 118 BC, it is a testament to the rich numismatic culture of Carthage and the Punic War era. The coin features the bearded portrait of King Micipsa or Massinissa on the obverse and a galloping horse on the reverse.
Numidia was the ancient kingdom of the Numidians in northwest Africa. During the Second Punic War (218–201 BC), Masinissa, king of the Massylii, defeated Syphax of the Masaesyli to unify Numidia into the first Berber state in present-day Algeria. Carthage relied on the Numidians for cavalry in the Punic Wars. The kingdom began as a sovereign state and later alternated between being a Roman province and a Roman client state.
Micipsa was the eldest legitimate son of Masinissa and became the King of Numidia in 148 BC.
NGC is the premier ancient coin certification process. It consists of authentication, grading, attribution, and encapsulation in plastic holders or Coin slabs. NGC certification offers significant protection against counterfeiting, misattribution, overgrading, and damage.
This is a great addition to any coin collection and a valuable insight into the history of ancient coins.
