The Burnet House was once the crown jewel of Cincinnati hospitality—a grand hotel that stood at the corner of Third and Vine Streets from 1850 to 1926. Designed by renowned architect Isaiah Rogers, it was considered one of the finest hotels in the world when it opened on May 30, 1850, boasting 340 rooms, running water, and a gilded dome that gave it the appearance of a capitol building.Abraham Lincoln stayed there twice—once in 1859 while campaigning, and again in 1861 en route to his inauguration. Other notable guests included Edward VII (then Prince of Wales), Jenny Lind, and Oscar Wilde.On March 20, 1864, Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman met in Parlor A to plan the campaigns that would ultimately end the Civil War. That room later hosted Grand Army of the Republic meetings.The hotel featured parlors, reading and smoking rooms, billiard rooms, and a grand staircase leading to Ionic columns.
The hotel was owned by S.P. Saunders & Co. during the 1860s, accounting for the signature on this 10¢ issued note.
