Originally developed alongside the Model 1874 Palmer Brace System, these canvas bags served as the soldier\'s clothing/possessions haversack (and were frequently paired with the Chambers sling once the brace system was phased out). The Type 3 variation is distinguished by its all-canvas construction—replacing earlier rubberized flaps and leather reinforcement edges with heavy-duty folded canvas trim, canvas closure billets, and interior button-down meat can / utensil pocket.

Fabric & Canvas: Very good antique condition. Fabric remains supple with honest period field use, light soiling, and age spotting. No major dry rot or large tears.
Markings: Both the exterior U.S. stencil and the interior WATERVLIET ARSENAL manufacturer stamps remain sharp and fully legible.
Hardware & Straps: Roller buckles and retention billets are intact. Seams are strong throughout with only minor loose/frayed edge threads typical of 19th-century canvas.
