Available for purchase is an original antique etching by the listed French etcher and artist Alphonse Legros (1837-1911). The etching is titled \"Soleil D\'hiver Dans Les Bois\" (Woods in Winter Sun, 1st Plate). The image depicts a dark forest with large trees dimly lit by the sun during Winter. Although undated, this etching was almost certainly produced after 1877, when the first catalogue raisonné of Legros\'s prints was published with no mention of this title. The first plate with this title was produced in just a single state with only 4 impressions (according to information on the back of the frame), so it\'s a very rare etching.The impression portion of this etching measures about 4 7/8\" tall and 3 3/4\" wide. I\'m not sure of the total paper size, as I haven\'t examined the etching outside of the frame. The etching is pencil signed \"A. Legros\" in the lower right margin. It is framed and matted in a wood frame that measures approximately 13 1/4\" x 11 5/8\". The title is listed on the matte. The back side has some handwritten information, including the state and number of impressions. The image is listed as \"Bliss 363\", a reference to the catalog number assigned by Frank Bliss is his reference titled \"A catalogue of the etchings, drypoints and lithographs, by Professor Alphonse Legros (1837-1911) in the collection of Frank E. Bliss\" (London: printed for private circulation, 1923).I purchased this scarce etching at a recent estate sale, along with several others that I\'m selling separately (please see my other listings). The only other example I can find pictured online is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. This etching is guaranteed to be an original Legros impression and not a reprint. Please check my positive response and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.Artist Biography: Alphonse Legros (1837-1911) was the single most influential European printmaker upon the development of the etching revival in England. Born in Dijon, France, Legros was persuaded to move to London by Whistler, whom he had met in Paris. Legros rapidly achieved recognition for his highly accomplished etchings and in 1875 was placed in charge of the etching class at the Royal College in South Kensington and the following year was made Professor of Fine Art at the influential Slade School. It was during his eighteen years in this post that Legros was to exert a formidable influence upon the direction of an entire generation of British printmakers.Legros’ works exhibit less economy of line than the younger generation of etching revivalists. As a result, his scenes of allegory and peasant life in the French landscape are characterized by bold outlines and heavy crosshatching. He was a terrific technician, evident in his use of etching and drypoint alike.Condition of this Alphonse Legros etching is EXCELLENT. The paper has very little age toning. The image is very clean. The wood frame is also in good shape with just a few minor bumps. As I mentioned previously, I have not examined the etching outside of the frame.
