One of the first two TCG cards ever illustrated by Atsuko Nishida (the original designer of Pikachu) are the Illustrator and the Vending Series 1 Pikachu.
Nishida’s artwork has always had this incredible ability to make Pokémon feel alive without needing an overly complicated scene. This Pikachu is a perfect example.
Rather than a dramatic battle scene or elaborate background, Pikachu is captured in a simple, natural pose with that unmistakable Nishida softness. The loose, organic environment surrounding it gives the artwork almost a storybook quality. There’s something incredibly nostalgic about the way the background, colors, and character all blend together 😍
And having Nishida illustrate Pikachu makes this card even more special.She is, of course, the original designer of Pikachu, along with numerous other Pokémon from the original games. Her early work helped establish the visual identity of Pokémon itself, and Pikachu would ultimately become the face of the entire franchise.
