Offered is a superb matched pair of American Brilliant Period (ABP) cut-glass Pairpoint compotes, dating to circa 1895–1910, representing upper-tier American hand-cut crystal from the height of the Brilliant era.
Each compote features a 5.5-inch diameter bowl decorated with an unusually complex and highly refined cutting scheme, integrating finely mitred cross-hatched diamonds, fan cutting, and deeply sculpted geometric elements, all aligned with exceptional precision around the circumference. The cutting is deep, confident, and sharply defined, with crisp knife-edge miters and no softness — clear indicators of master-level workmanship rather than routine shop production.
The bowls are raised on tall faceted stems and finished with full star-cut bases with long, sharply defined rays, producing dramatic light refraction and elegant vertical proportions. At 9 inches in height, these are desirable tall-form compotes (tazzas), originally intended for centerpiece or formal dessert service.
Rarity & Complexity
What distinguishes this pair is the complexity of the pattern construction rather than reliance on a single decorative motif. The cutter combined multiple advanced cutting techniques within a single form, requiring extensive hand labor, careful layout, and exacting symmetry. Such patterns were costly to execute and therefore produced in limited quantities, as simpler designs were far more economical for mass sale.
Tall compotes exhibiting this level of layered cutting and precision are considerably less common than standard Brilliant Period bowls. Matched pairs, especially in this size and condition, are particularly scarce, having often been separated or damaged over time. This is a high-end Brilliant Period design, intended for an affluent clientele rather than everyday table use.
Marked intelligibly, but the quality and cutting style are consistent with work produced by leading American firms such as Libbey, Hawkes, Hoare, or Dorflinger.
