Pair of 19th Century Antique Japanese Bronze Hand Mirrors (Wakagami)

Up for sale is an authentic, matching pair of traditional Japanese bronze hand mirrors (Wakagami or Ekagami), estimated to have been crafted between c. 1820 and 1880 (Late Edo to Early Meiji Period). In feudal Japan, hand-cast mirrors were prized personal treasures and key items in wedding dowries presented to bring good fortune, health, and a prosperous marriage.

​Master Artisan Signatures & Lineage:

During the Edo period, master bronze mirror makers were granted honorary court titles, adopting legendary clan names as markers of exceptional quality:

​Mirror 1 (Crane & Pine Motif): Signed 藤原光長 (Fujiwara Mitsunaga). Fujiwara was a prestigious court-sanctioned artisan lineage active in Kyoto/Edo metalworking.

​Mirror 2 (Butterfly Motif): Signed 菅原 藤全 (Sugawara Tozen). Belongs to the respected Sugawara artisan branch.

​Auspicious Motifs & Symbolism:

​Mirror 1: Features a flying crane (Tsuru), long-tailed turtle (Kame), pine (Matsu), and bamboo (Take). Together, these depict Horaisan (the land of eternal youth), symbolizing long life and health. Topped with a round samurai/noble family crest (Mokkō-mon).
