Photograph Notes: "Wanda" > /photo/5497507 is based at the Strumpshaw Hall Steam Museum in the Broadland district of Norfolk, and a general purpose one-cylinder steam engine built in 1924. Here she can be seen at the Marsham Starting Handle Club's summer show. For a more detailed look see > /photo/5494739.The company was established in 1840 by Richard Wallis as corn, salt and coal merchants at Basingstoke, Hampshire. When the North Hants Iron Works was opened in 1856, Charles Haslam joined it. By then, the company had been making mainly threshing machines, and in 1860 Wallis and Haslam won a prize at the RASE Canterbury Show for the best threshing machine to be worked by horsepower. In 1861, Charles Steevens joined the business and the manufacture of steam engines was developed. A new works was opened in 1966 at Daneshill. Wallis and Steevens ceased trading in 1981.
