Offered here is an authentic Pre-Columbian pottery figure from West Mexico, attributed to the Colima culture and dating from approximately 300 BCE to 300 CE.
This sculpture depicts a nude male figure standing with legs slightly apart and arms raised across the chest. The figure is rendered in a compact, rounded form characteristic of Colima figural tradition, with a strong sense of volume and balance. He wears a tall headdress and prominent jewelry, suggesting status or ceremonial importance.
Colima figures are among the most recognizable forms of ancient Mesoamerican art, known for their expressive forms and naturalistic yet stylized representations of human and animal subjects. These works were often placed in shaft tombs as offerings, intended to accompany the deceased into the afterlife and reflect aspects of daily life, identity, and belief systems.
This example presents well and is a fine representation of the sculptural traditions of ancient West Mexico.
